Note: For an current list of companies on Twitter, check out my Twitter Brand Index.
@missusP asked a question last week I found very interesting: “What corporations do you follow on Twitter?”
Great question. I conducted some quick research, looking at brands with a presence on twitter. Here’s what I found — please note: those that lacked a degree of corporate polish have been indicated as questionable. The list after the break…

I wanted to point out something in the Bio for @Woot: “The (now) official Woot twitter bot.” IMO, this demonstrated two significant challenges in social media: how to protect your brand across different platforms and; how to best define or leverage reputation & accountablitity. For example, who owns http://twitter.com/Cartoon_Network? If I setup an account for BMW with news and comments, how many people would follow it?
@time2simplify, thank you for starting this list! This is great. I will continue to ask the question as we all figure out the power of this fabulous community and how to best take part without abusing it. I would add that you forgot @PerkettPR of course
That being said, and in all seriousness, there is great conversation taking place around this every day. Shel Israel, Jeremiah Owyang, Abbie Lundberg and many others have written about it. It is intriguing to figure this out together as a community.
Also, @pistachio had some fantastic pointers in this blog post someone Twittered about today: http://redcouch.typepad.com/weblog/2008/04/twittering-her.html
Let’s keep up the interaction, shared insights and ideas. It’s the beauty of this crazy thing called the Internet.
Thanks for the comment, Christine. I’ve added @PerkettPR to the list, along with a few others mentioned in your blog.
Your post at http://perkettprsuasion.com/2008/04/03/corporate-twitter-entities-yay-or-nay/ brings up some great points. The conversation itself is what amazes me. From an agency perspectgive (which I’ve spent most of my career), it is extremely satisfying to help a company get a real pulse on its customers/clients. This conversation extends to our space as we collectively debate and define this medium. What fun and powerful work!
I don’t know if I buy into how twitter works well with customer service. It sounds like a cheap marketing tool to me.
Great list — thanks for that. Have been trying to explain Twitter to some of my traditional clients and they always like to know what other brands are doing these wacky social media things
Charities are out there too, like:

Don’t forget Quizzle — @quizzle — a new website from Quicken Loans that’s all about your home and money. We’ve had a great experience with Twitter so far. The people are friendly and sharp, it’s a great way to get feedback and to learn about other related websites/companies out there that we may want to partner with. We’re huge fans!
NetBanker mentions how we use Twitter: http://www.netbanker.com/2008/04/quicken_loans_is_really_using_twitter.html
Twitter me UP, you have a very good point. Some companies may, in fact, misuse the tool and maintain an account as a “cheap markeitng tool.” I think the tweet-cosystem is capapble of weeding out these people, as it would shed followers quite quickly. There are several organizations that understand the space.
Ann-Marie, check out the Twitter Brand Index page on my blog. @Quizzle is listed! I love seeing companies “get it,” especially one from the financial services sector.
@dogstrust is now on the list — thanks for the heads up Candace.
Thanks for this list, I’m already following the BBC, but some of the others will be on my list asap, except Mr Modine that is..

Great post, and timely for me. I’m looking at getting companies to use Twitter for all manner of things. One issue is that until they offer a ‘true’ pro package with guaranteed up-time and other contractual niceties, it will be hard to persuade clients that it is a solution they can rely on. If you build any kind of corporate process on a free tool, what if it disappears tomorrow?
Great point, Paul. The tinyurl meltdown not that long ago is a great example. Following Charlene Li’s thoughts on the opening of the application framework, I think as APIs evolve and data becomes portable, this will be less of a concern.
That being said, if I was a director of C-level in an enterprise/government agency, I would build my own system and port comments/content to existing apps. It would be a strategic vunerability to rely completely on any one platform.
Excellent list and a great resource; thanks for taking the time to pull it together.
Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos, did an interview for me on Diva Marketing about using Twitter to help build Zappos’ corporate culture. Yet another way to use Twitter - http://tinyurl.com/4moj9a
